“Sniff-Off” Results
2008
K-9 Narcotics Detection Trials
The American
Police Canine Association recently held the annual “Sniff-Off”
Narcotics Detection Trials on Saturday, March 1, 2008. The
event was hosted by the Bedford, Indiana Police Department.
This years event consisted of twenty-one law enforcement
narcotics teams from the states of Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.
Team competition scores were close across the board, with
hundredths of a second separating the rankings for the top three
places. This years event kicked off on Friday evening with a
social reception at the Comfort Inn with a lot of great food and
event shirts provided by the association. Team members had an
enjoyable evening of meeting new and former Sniff-Off”
participants and of course, sharing the usual K-9 “War Stories”.
Teams were off
and running at 6:00am the next morning in which teams were
served a hot breakfast followed by a rules briefing at the Otis
Park Golf Club. The competition commenced at 7:00am in which
teams participated in three search venues throughout the city
consisting of Vehicle, Building and Odor Canister searches.
Teams were provided lunch and dinner during the day. Line
judges for this years event were Denny Kunkel, Shawn Mayer and
Mike Johnson. The competition concluded at 5:00pm with team
scores being calculated and three awards places being presented
at the Otis Park Golf Club.
This years
first place spot as “Champion Team” was presented to Deputy Russ
Day & K-9 Abby, a giant schnauzer of the Daviess County,
Kentucky Sheriff’s Department with a search time of 3.5771
minutes. Second place as the “Runner-Up” Team was presented to
Officer Jacob Jump and K-9 Newby of the Lawrenceburg, Indiana
Police Department with a search time of 5.5364 minutes. The
third place “Semi-Finalist” Team award was presented to Officer
Steve Morgan & K-9 Bady of the Owensboro, Kentucky Police
Department with a search time of 6.024 minutes.
The contestant
teams for the 08 “Sniff-Off”, as in past years were exceptional
performers. Each year the competition times have decreased as
the roster of teams registering for this event continues to
grow. Plans for next years 09 “Sniff-Off” will include an
additional fourth search phase, being commercial vehicles.
