“Sniff-Off” Results

2008 K-9 Narcotics Detection Trials

The American Police Canine Association recently held the annual “Sniff-Off” Narcotics Detection Trials on Saturday, March 1, 2008.  The event was hosted by the Bedford, Indiana Police Department.  This years event consisted of twenty-one law enforcement narcotics teams from the states of Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.  Team competition scores were close across the board, with hundredths of a second separating the rankings for the top three places.  This years event kicked off on Friday evening with a social reception at the Comfort Inn with a lot of great food and event shirts provided by the association.  Team members had an enjoyable evening of meeting new and former Sniff-Off” participants and of course, sharing the usual K-9 “War Stories”.

Teams were off and running at 6:00am the next morning in which teams were served a hot breakfast followed by a rules briefing at the Otis Park Golf Club.  The competition commenced at 7:00am in which teams participated in three search venues throughout the city consisting of Vehicle, Building and Odor Canister searches.  Teams were provided lunch and dinner during the day.  Line judges for this years event were   Denny Kunkel, Shawn Mayer and Mike Johnson.  The competition concluded at 5:00pm with team scores being calculated and three awards places being presented at the Otis Park Golf Club.

This years first place spot as “Champion Team” was presented to Deputy Russ Day & K-9 Abby, a giant schnauzer of the Daviess County, Kentucky Sheriff’s Department with a search time of 3.5771 minutes.  Second place as the “Runner-Up” Team was presented to Officer Jacob Jump and K-9 Newby of the Lawrenceburg, Indiana Police Department with a search time of 5.5364 minutes.  The third place “Semi-Finalist” Team award was presented to Officer Steve Morgan & K-9 Bady of the Owensboro, Kentucky Police Department with a search time of 6.024 minutes.

The contestant teams for the 08 “Sniff-Off”, as in past years were exceptional performers.  Each year the competition times have decreased as the roster of teams registering for this event continues to grow.  Plans for next years 09 “Sniff-Off” will include an additional fourth search phase, being commercial vehicles.

We wish to thank each of our sponsors which assisted in making the 08 “Sniff-Off” a great success.  Special thanks to Bedford Ford-Lincoln-Mercury for this years vehicles and A & B Trophy for this years event shirts.  Also to Jay C Plus Food Store for the food contributed for this event.  Last but not least, a “Hats Off” to the Comfort Inn for the great food and “going the extra mile” accommodations for this years teams.
