The Concord

Seminar April 14-18, 2008. K-9 Teams from the states of North
Carolina and Indiana attended this years annual event. The week
consisted of basic and advanced training, including entry
scenarios and certification testing. Several classroom topics
were also provided to interested teams including Scent classes,
Drug interdiction and an informative veterinarian presentation
by Dr. Ann Yowell, DVM. Forty certifications were conducted by
APCA Master Trainers in patrol and narcotics detection.
Instructors
assisting at this years event were Master Trainers Pat Merritt,
Brian Russell, Scott Roberts and Mike Johnson. Trainers
assisting at this event were Tony Atwell, Mike Drake, Dennis
Smith and Dannie Cline. Field training commenced each day at
8:00am which was preceded by a morning pre-training briefing and
concluded at 4:00pm. Evening classes were provided during the
week for teams until 8:30pm. Teams received forty hours of law
enforcement training credit which attended this event.
Several
training venues were staffed throughout the city in which teams
experienced minimum downtime during the seminar. Feedback
response from participating teams was highly positive in which
teams felt they more than achieved their training goals for this
seminar. Lodging and meeting room accommodations were provided
by the Wyndham by Wingate of Concord.
On a business
note, the APCA Executive Board and Accreditation Boards also
convened in which several business items were addressed and
approved for the betterment and advancement of the association.
Two certification disciplines were added to the associations
certification testing. These being explosive detection
certification testing and cadaver detector testing for law
enforcement teams. These new certification standards and
accreditation amendments will soon become available on the
associations website. The APCA Accreditation board also
approved Master Trainer accreditation status to Jonni R. Joyce
in Cadaver Detector Teams. Congratulations Jonni.
The Association
wishes to extend its sincerest appreciation to the Concord
Police Department and its K9 Units for hosting a great week of
training for our members. The North Carolina Spring Seminar is
a top caliber seminar for K-9 Units to receive exceptional
training and this year was no exception. Thank you guys for a
great seminar and all your hard work in its planning!
On a final
note, The APCA wishes to especially thank the Concord Family
Restaurant for the exceptional meals they provided and donated
during the seminar. We greatly appreciate the many years of
