Association News & Events

President’s Update . . .

Spring 08 is upon us in which our association has been very active in conducting two recent training events and is currently preparing for the upcoming 2008 APCA National Conference this coming fall.  The fourth annual APCA “Sniff-Off” Narcotics Detection Trials were held in Bedford, Indiana on March 1, 2008.  Twenty-one law enforcement narcotics teams competed in this year’s competition.  The association wishes to congratulate this year’s top three awards winners. Top honors in receiving the 2008 “Champion Team” award were presented to Deputy Russ Day & K-9 Abby of the Daviess County, Kentucky Sheriff’s Department.  Second Runner-Up Team honors were presented to Officer Jacob Jump & K-9 Newby of the Lawrenceburg, Indiana Police Department.  The Semi-Finalist Team award for third place was taken by Officer Steve Morgan & K-9 Bady of the Owensboro, Kentucky Police Department.  Complete details of the 2008 “Sniff-Off” can be found on the event schedule of our website.

During the week of April 14-18, 2008, the association held the 08 APCA North Carolina Spring Seminar in Concord, North Carolina.  The Concord Police Department is to be commended for hosting an exceptional training event.  APCA Master Trainer Pat Merritt and the Concord K-9 Unit put on a great week of training for our attending members. Several units from North Carolina and Indiana attended this years seminar.  This seminar offered basic problem solving, advanced training scenarios, classroom instruction and certifications throughout the week.  The association continues to recognize those members for outstanding achievement in which congratulations are extended to Officer Ricardo Rodriguez & K-9 Brex of the Concord, North Carolina Police Department.  This team received the APCA Level 3 trailing certification during this seminar and are the fourth trailing team to obtain the associations highest certification standard.  Additional details covering the 2008 APCA North Carolina Spring Seminar can be found on the event schedule of our website.

This years main event, the 2008 APCA National Conference to be hosted by the Allen County, Indiana Police Department will be held in Fort Wayne, Indiana during the week of September 22-26, 2008.  This year’s conference promises to be an outstanding training event with numerous training offerings for both the entry and advanced level K-9 team.  The Allen County Police Department has been working diligently during the past year in the preparation and planning for this years conference.  This is a must attend event for those law enforcement teams interested in participating in diverse training applications to include K-9 tactical usage and deployment venues.  On line 08 National Conference information and registration forms may be obtained on this website.  Please be sure to mark your calendars and register today.  We hope to see you there!

Additional association news...... Mr. Charles M. Braun II, Staff Attorney for the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (I.L.E.A.) has advised the APCA he will be posting his initial Search & Seizure case law opinions column during the week of April 21st 2008.  The association has received much interest in the publication of this legal column.  Mr. Braun’s writings and research promise to be the most current and highly educational pertaining to this important aspect in law enforcement.

The American Police Canine Association continues to be the catalyst in the police canine profession pertaining to the training and certification of School Resource Officer (SRO) Canine Detection Teams.  The association has received national recognition and interest in this specialized certification testing from prominent law enforcement associations and law enforcement agencies.  The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) will be hosting its 2008 National Conference July 28-August 1, 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona.  NASRO has extended invitations to APCA Master Trainer Scott Roberts, Officer Anthony J. Pape and Officer Kevin Nehr, Allen County Police Department, Indiana, as guest presenters, in which they will address the American Police Canine Association’s Certification Testing & Training Program during the 2008 NASRO National Conference.

Certification testing conducted by the American Police Canine Association continues to expand.  The association has adopted two additional certification testing disciplines submitted by experts in their fields.  The Explosive Detection Certification Testing and the Cadaver Detector Certification Testing for law enforcement are now inclusive in the certifications offered by the American Police Canine Association.  These certification standards may be obtained on our certification page.

In closing remarks, The American Police Canine Association continues to grow professionally as reflected by its expanding national membership. To each and every member in this association, each of you have worked so diligently to make this association what it represents today.  A professional law enforcement canine association.  It is indeed a complete team member effort.  As President, I wish to extend my sincerest heartfelt appreciation and say “Thank You”  to the APCA Executive Board, Master Trainers, Trainers and each of our members for all that you do for our Association.

Respectfully Yours in Dogs,

Michael D. Johnson, President                                             American Police Canine Association
